Stairs

Stairs can be a challenge. They can also be a real hazard to negotiate on crutches, especially if you mix stairs and pain medications. For that reason, avoid stairs when you choose a location within your home for recovery. If your master bedroom is on the second level of your home, accessed by stairs, then you need to find a main level location for several weeks. Sometimes a few stairs simply can't be avoided, such as the entrance to your home.  If you know in advance that a lower limb amputation is in your future, get your crutches early and practice.  It may be a safer option to go up and down stairs by sitting on your bottom and taking one stair at a time, with help standing by.
